Hardwood floors are one of the most valuable features in a Bay Area home — and one of the most commonly damaged by improper cleaning. Here's how to do it right.
The most common hardwood mistake: too much water. A mop should be barely damp — wring it until almost dry before touching hardwood.
Daily/as needed: Sweep or dust mop to remove grit and debris. Grit acts like sandpaper on hardwood finishes when walked over.
Weekly: Damp mop only — use a flat microfiber mop, barely moistened. Use a pH-neutral hardwood floor cleaner (Bona is excellent).
Monthly: Check for any scuffs or dull areas. A small amount of hardwood floor polish can restore shine to dull spots.
Wipe immediately with a clean dry cloth. Liquid on hardwood is a race against time — the longer it sits, the more damage it does.
Keep pet nails trimmed. Use area rugs in high-traffic pet areas. Wipe pet food and water bowls underneath regularly — spillage is the #1 cause of hardwood damage in pet-owning homes.
Bay Area hardwood typically needs refinishing every 7-10 years depending on traffic. Signs it's time: deep scratches that can't be buffed, dull areas that don't respond to cleaning, bare wood showing through the finish.
