The Easiest Way to Clean a Microwave (No Scrubbing Required)
By the Thrive Cleaners Team · 3 min read
This is one of the simplest cleaning hacks in our toolkit — and it genuinely eliminates the need to scrub.
The Steam Method
- Fill a microwave-safe bowl with 1 cup of water and 1-2 tablespoons of white vinegar
- Add a toothpick (prevents superheating)
- Microwave on high for 5 minutes
- Leave the door closed for 3-5 more minutes — the steam continues to work
- Remove the bowl carefully (it will be hot)
- Wipe the interior with a damp cloth — everything should come off effortlessly
The steam loosens every splatter that would otherwise require hard scrubbing. It works even on months-old baked-on food.
Don't Forget
- Remove and wash the turntable plate in the sink with dish soap
- Wipe the door interior, especially the seal
- Clean the exterior — top, sides, and handle
- Wipe the vent area on top — grease accumulates there
Frequency
Once a month keeps most microwaves in good shape. If you heat anything that splatters (tomato sauce, soups), wipe it immediately rather than letting it bake on during the next use.
Odors
Persistent microwave odors: place a bowl of baking soda inside overnight with the door closed. For fish odors specifically, coffee grounds work better than baking soda.
