The refrigerator is where your family's food lives. It deserves more attention than a quick shelf wipe once a year.
Full deep clean: every 3-4 months. Quick wipe of shelves: monthly. Spills: immediately — they're far harder to remove after drying and can harbor bacteria.
Step 1 — Empty completely: This is the only way to clean it properly. Put items in a cooler. Check expiration dates as you go — this is the natural opportunity to purge.
Step 2 — Remove all shelves and drawers: Wash them in warm soapy water in the sink. Let them come to room temperature first if your kitchen is cold — glass shelves can crack from temperature shock.
Step 3 — Clean the interior: Mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda with 1 quart of warm water. This cleans and deodorizes without harsh chemicals. Wipe all surfaces, paying extra attention to corners and the bottom where spills pool.
The door seals are the most neglected part of any refrigerator. Food particles and mold accumulate in the folds. Use a soft toothbrush dipped in baking soda solution to scrub them clean.
Step 4 — The exterior: Wipe down all exterior surfaces. Clean the top (collects grease from cooking). Pull the refrigerator out and vacuum the condenser coils underneath or at the back — dusty coils reduce efficiency and lifespan.
