15 Professional Cleaning Hacks That Actually Work

These are the tricks our team uses every day across hundreds of Bay Area homes. No gimmicks — just methods that genuinely work.

  1. Shower squeegee after every use. 30 seconds prevents 80% of soap scum buildup. The single highest-ROI cleaning habit.
  2. Rubber gloves for pet hair. Drag a damp rubber glove across upholstery. Outperforms most lint rollers and is reusable.
  3. Dryer sheets for baseboards. Wipe baseboards with a dryer sheet after cleaning. The anti-static coating repels dust for weeks.
  4. Baking soda paste for oven glass. Apply thick, leave 30 minutes, wipe. No commercial oven cleaner needed.
  5. Vinegar-soaked paper towels for faucets. Wrap around faucets and showerheads for an hour to dissolve mineral deposits.
  6. Pillowcase for ceiling fans. Slide a pillowcase over each blade and pull off — the dust falls into the pillowcase, not onto your furniture.
  7. The pillowcase fan trick is the single most-appreciated hack we share with clients. Try it once and you'll never clean fan blades any other way.

  8. Dish soap on carpet grease. Dawn dish soap directly on fresh grease stain, let sit, cold water rinse. Works better than most carpet spot cleaners.
  9. Toothbrush for grout and crevices. Keep a dedicated cleaning toothbrush for tile grout, faucet bases, and tight corners.
  10. Lint roller for lampshades. Lampshades collect dust and can't be wiped. A sticky lint roller picks it up cleanly.
  11. Lemon for the garbage disposal. Freeze lemon halves. Run them through the disposal for cleaning and deodorizing.
  12. Newspaper for streak-free glass. Old newspaper is still one of the best materials for polishing glass to a streak-free shine.
  13. Rubbing alcohol for stainless steel. Removes fingerprints and leaves stainless looking sharp. Follow the grain direction.
  14. Coffee filters for dusting screens. TV screens, computer monitors: a dry coffee filter picks up dust without scratching.
  15. Hydrogen peroxide for cutting boards. Spray 3% hydrogen peroxide on wooden cutting boards, let sit 5 minutes, rinse. Kills bacteria without damaging the wood.
  16. Bread bag ties for vacuum attachment storage. Keep your vacuum attachments in a labeled bag hung near the vacuum. They're actually available when you need them.
